Train Noise.

The environment around the Station is normally very quiet, especially if you are used to the city. The railway line adjacent to the Station is the summit of the main Adelaide to Melbourne line as it crosses the Adelaide Hills. On average, there are about 8 trains a day and two or three of these will be overnight. Most are relatively quiet but some may be noisy. Ultimately, when I am asked, I am guided by the candid feedback from guests. Most of them are surprised that the trains are less noisy than they expected. The general opinion seems to be that the noise is less annoying than aircraft, road traffic and city noise and is all part of the fun of staying at the Station.

Air-conditioning

The district originally became very popular as a summer retreat because of its mild summer temperatures, especially at night. The building is of massive sandstone construction with 12 foot (3.6 metre) ceilings. Consequently, air-conditioning is not required.

Cooking

The kitchen has everything required for light cooking up to, but not including, a full sized oven. This includes mini oven, microwave, hotplates, frypan and cutlery and crockery for up to 30 persons. The kitchenette includes sink, bar fridge, microwave and cutlery and crockery for 6 persons.

Fire and Emergency Safety

Fire safety, like insurance, is one of those things that no one thinks about until a fire occurs. The Station is unusual for this level of accommodation in that it has a smoke and fire detection system and a fire sprinkler system. There are four fire extinguisher stations throughout the building. It has emergency back up battery lighting through all areas except bedrooms.

Firewood

The first quota of firewood is supplied for each booking. Subsequent firewood is supplied on request at cost. Firewood, kindling and firelighters are provided for inside fires only and not outside braziers or barbeques. The open fireplaces in the Waiting Room Lounge and the Club Car are approved for use. While there are fireplaces in most of the rooms, these are not used for fire safety reasons. Guests are welcome to bring their own supplies of firewood.

Functions

The layout and space at the Station make it ideal for certain types of functions. It has been used successfully for birthday parties, family re-unions, open house, weddings and more. The function must be associated with the use of the venue for accommodation. It must be booked on the First Class package for exclusive use. This allows up to 18 overnight guests depending on the sleeping layout. There are additional charges for more intensive uses. An additional 20 day visitors will cost an extra $100. An additional 60 day visitors will cost an extra $300. The rate is approximately $100 per 20 guests. We have set 60 as a practical maximum but can go to 80 for particular events. There is ample car parking. Charges depend very much on the nature and intensity of the use so discuss your requirements and we will negotiate a rate.

The whole surrounding district is a garden, but the Station has its own extensive grounds including the original Station Garden.

The building is heated with a combination of oil column convection /radiant heaters and open wood fires. The region is known for its cool weather so ensure you bring some warm clothes. This cannot be much of a disincentive to visit as winter continues to grow as our most popular season.

Heating for outside areas is not supplied. Clear PVC weather blinds are fitted to the Platform Verandah undercover area. The heat builds up under the verandah and provides a comfortable space. For additional heating, we have two outdoor gas space heaters available for hire at $50 each per weekend plus gas. Allow $30 gas per heater for 10 hours use. Braziers or half drums may be used outside of the undercover area.
