The Old Signal Box

After construction of the station in 1883, a signal box was built in 1884 near the western end of the main building. This was used for a short time before being superseded by an elevated timber replacement closer to the bridge. This in turn was replaced in 1929 by the larger signal box integral with the main building which we now call the Trainspotters' Lounge and which is part of our Club Car apartment.

Until now, the Old Signal Box has been used as an office and store room. In response to requests from the public, it is gradually being prepared for self contained accommodation. The upstairs area, formerly the working space & lever room, will be a lounge and the downstairs area will be a bedroom. A kitchen will join the stone building with the original bath-house.

The "Baderloo" Sleeping Car

From 1906 to 1923, fourteen Pullman style sleeping cars were constructed for the Adelaide to Melbourne express passenger train. Baderloo was built in 1919 and is a sister car to the earlier constructed Onkaparinga which is now at the National Railway Museum.

For over 35 years, the Baderloo has been stored in the open in the Adelaide Hills. During its later life, the elements have taken their toll on the condition of this once fabulous carriage.

We have purchased the Baderloo and plan a major rebuild into what will be a tremendous place to stay.

All effort will be made to recreate the atmosphere of the time. The compartments will be retained for two thirds of the car with the remaining space being an enlarged version of the original lounge. Two twinette compartments will be restored to original, two more will be combined to make a double version, another will be made into a bathroom and one more into a kitchenette. There will be an open platform on one end. Can't wait?
